The oil painting is widely used in countries around the world and it has appeared in Vietnam during the French colonization. Since the early 20th century, the French opened the École Supérieure des Beaux Arts de l’Indochine (Indochina College of Art) to popularize this art to Vietnamese people.
It is a new modern material in that time, so French teachers cannot think the oil painting will strongly develop as it does now. The feature of oil paintings is the reality of real people, villages and streets. The famous artists who took the line of painting to the top can be named as To Ngoc Van, Tran Van Cam, Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Bui Xuan Phai and so on. Now the oil painting is a mainly material of Vietnamese painting.
