The former capital of the Nguyen emperors always boasts a good collection of tombs spreading out along the Perfume River picturesque on a clear day, atmospheric even in less flattering weather. Some of the tomb complexes are as large as a small town, and all are wonderfully preserved and have many features within their compounds.

Nestled in a small valley in Thuong Ba village, Thuong Xuan commune, the Tu Duc Royal Tomb is one of several tombs in the suburb of the Imperial Capital.

The tomb was designed as a tribute to the fourth Nguyen Emperor’s long. The tomb’s construction began from 1864 and finishes in 1867 with 50 monuments surrounded by a 1500m wall.

To satisfy the desire of the emperor Tu Duc who reigned longest among the Nguyen, his tomb was designed to work in harmony with the carefully-manicured landscape. As a world for his eternal life after death, the tomb is set in poetic scenery of boundless pine forest, a magnificent lake and pavilion complex where the Emperor could write verse, which makes a strong impression on many tourists.
